Happy new year. I’m an idiot and I have a problem and I’m not sure what to do.

Facts:

  1. Building a 10’x12’ shed in Florida
  2. Concrete slab, estimating its about 3.5” deep
  3. I ignorantly used 1x4 sill plates (they are ground contact PT wood) with 3 & 3/4” Simpson wedge anchors every 2 feet.
  4. I realized I should’ve used a minimum size of 2x4 sill plate
  5. The wedge anchors are too short to install 2x4 sill plates

What do I do?

  • Do I drill more holes and put new wedge anchors with unused anchors sticking unbolted through the new 2x4 sill plate?
  • Do I leave the 1x4 sill plate and anchors and just use it?
  • Are there alternative means to anchoring the shed to overcome the weakness of the 1x4 sill plate?
  • Something else?

Thank you in advance.

If you can get suitable length anchors for the whole sandwich, put the 2x4 plate on top of the 1x4 plate with the longer anchors offset from the short anchors holding the 1x4, and a healthy dose of construction adhesive between the 1x4 and 2x4.

I can't see any way that's inferior to removing the 1x4 and installing a 2x4 instead, and in some ways it seems superior.

But ask your local building official first, if the shed will be inspected.
