I hear about rodents crawling into the top of vent stacks on the roof and chewing through the pvc in the attic.
What is the proper way to cap the vent stack on the roof?
I know one can put in a metal mesh but that may rust from rain. Is there something better?
Are the rodents crawling down the pipe or are they chewing through the roof vent collar? If they are getting through the roof vent collar, a sheet metal shop can make what is known as a storm collar that wraps around the vent pipe on the outside that will stop the problem.
If the roof vent collar must also be replaced, consider buying a piece of sheet metal the same size as the roof vent collar. Cut a hole the same size as the vent pipe in the center. Remove the shingles around the area, install the sheet metal, install the roof vent collar and replace the shingles. This prevents damage from the inside.
Install the storm collar.
