Had a leak and needed to get the drywall cut out to replace the pipe. We've already put quite a bit of money into this repair so we're wondering if we'd be able to repair the drywall ourselves or if we'd be better off getting a contractor to do it. If it's feasible DIY what would be the best way to go about it? The cutout is pretty large about 2.5'x4' and the studs are each another 4-6" away from where the edge of the drywall is.

Go to the studs and cut drywall about half way, so you have about 3/4 inch of stud to screw new drywall on.

Can also add pieces of 2x4 to the studs so you have something to screw the new drywall on.

Can also screw 1x4s to edges of old drywall to have something to screw new drywall edges on.

Mud and tape the edges of the patch. Feather the mud out about 8 to 12 inches from both sides of the patch edges.
