I'm going to be extending the pantry in the middle of this picture to the far wall.
As you can see, it is built with what I am fairly certain is a 2x10 header (based on relative sizes in the pic). I'm not 100% certain why a header of that size was used when the wall is not load bearing - the I-beams in the ceiling all extend to the inner wall - according to blueprints as well as decently visible in the pic. Personally I would assume that some sort of header would be necessary given the weight of the drywall up to the 9ft ceiling, and maybe 2x10 was simply the most convenient for the builder.
Nevertheless I will be extending that opening from 36-in to 72-in to accommodate a double bi-fold doors.
Are there any methods for extending that header that don't involve ripping the entire thing out? Could I prop it up and cut into one side of it and lengthen it via overlapping.
Basically just trying to figure out the least invasive, but still structurally sound, method of accomplishing this.
