Likely the vinyl is too thin for the load or the wind gust was too strong, but the latch has broken off. Is there a way to reinforce the vinyl? Would a longer latch distribute the load over a larger area? Other ways to fix?

I'd probably first look at simply replacing the post. If it's just a common 4x4 tube, it shouldn't be difficult to remove the fasteners and pop it on. I'd still consider adding a support block for your latch hardware, though (see below).
Otherwise, there are two basic repair approaches here: Wrap the vinyl with more vinyl (or metal), or insert wood or similar inside the post.
To wrap it, find a new piece of post or a 90° metal plate, then rivet or screw that over the damaged post. It could be a matching post with one side cut off. PVC pipe adhesive might help. Reinstall your latch hardware with through-bolts rather than just threaded screws.
To insert a block, find a hunk of treated wood, solid-core synthetic lumber, or something else that'll stand up to weather. Fit it inside, and optionally adhere it with project adhesive or caulk. Reinstall your latch hardware with screws that penetrate about 1½".
