I have a swimming pool that is no longer used. It costs a fortune to maintain. My insurance company says that it cannot remain empty and keep my homeowners insurance policy. They will cancel my insurance if I drain it.

I am unsure of the possible solutions. Fill in? Complete removal. Build a structure over it?

How do I get rid of an unused swimming pool?

Often what's done is to poke some holes in the bottom so it will drain, knock in the decking and top edges into the now-empty pool, and tamp/fill with dirt up to ground level. Also make sure to decomission any electrical/plumbing/gas going to the pool and pool house, as those will need to be properly removed as well. It's not a hard job to do, just takes time, some effort, and the proper equipment.

But without pictures or more information of your current pool situation, any more specific advice is not possible.

What to do is highly dependent on what area of the country (or world) you live in.

In Fla. and some other areas of the south, poking holes to drain can cause other problems like instigate a sink hole or the opposite and make the pool pop if in an area of high ground water. In this area the pool needs to be pumped out and the empty tub filled with fill dirt.

Your best bet is to contact the local building dept. and ask the question of what is the preferred method. You may need a permit, but it may also alert the taxing authority that an improvement has been removed and you property taxes may be reduced.
