I am prepping for an exterior repaint. Redwood siding. I have several spots where brick meets the wood siding. There doesn't seem to be any waterproofing in between brick and wood siding. How should I address the gap between the siding and wood, caulk, mortar, something else? I am located in a pretty arid climate and there doesn't seem to be any issues with wood rot. I mostly am wanting to seal it up for aesthetic reasons and to keep out bugs. enter image description here

  1. Chip away the mortar as seen in picture 1.
  2. Apply backer rod to open joints as seen in picture 2.
  3. Fill large holes with expanding foam as seen in picture 3.
  4. Get a good quality polyurethane sealant and apply to the joints.
  5. For the large hole in picture 3, mask off the brick around the hole, apply your sealant to cover the hole, tool smooth and remove the masking tape.
