I am prepping for an exterior repaint. Redwood siding. I have several spots where brick meets the wood siding. There doesn't seem to be any waterproofing in between brick and wood siding. How should I address the gap between the siding and wood, caulk, mortar, something else? I am located in a pretty arid climate and there doesn't seem to be any issues with wood rot. I mostly am wanting to seal it up for aesthetic reasons and to keep out bugs.

- Chip away the mortar as seen in picture 1.
- Apply backer rod to open joints as seen in picture 2.
- Fill large holes with expanding foam as seen in picture 3.
- Get a good quality polyurethane sealant and apply to the joints.
- For the large hole in picture 3, mask off the brick around the hole, apply your sealant to cover the hole, tool smooth and remove the masking tape.
