I have a HIPS rocking chair that I really enjoy, but twice now the left rocker has broken in almost the same place. The first time, it was still in warranty, and the manufacturer was kind enough to send a replacement. This most recent break is outside the warranty period. I really don't want to send more garbage to the dump, if this can be repaired. Any ideas as to what I could try?

Try sistering it with a piece of 1/4" exterior plywood on top of the rocker. Clamp the plywood to the rocker and use wood screws to hold it in place. Add some cut plywood to the edges too. You could also contact the manufacturer again. Many times they will still send replacement parts when an item is out of warranty just to keep customers happy and get good reviews. Even if they charge you, you get your rocking chair back. You could also check around for a wood shop class or a cabinet shop and have them cut one out.
