I have an older home and I am looking to replace the siding, and while I am there it looks like the boards behind the siding need to be replaced as well. The siding is currently cedar lap. I am looking to replace it all with Hardie Board siding.
The question is about replacing the boards behind it. It's not plywood or OSB; it's some sort of fiberboard. It very dark brown and rather soft. Soft enough that an animal (say a squirrel) can chew through it and get into the house, which is why I'd like to replace it.
I was first looking to go with ZIP siding, but after some reading, I am worried that ZIP would be so tight it might trap the moisture in the walls and cause the wood frame to rot. So I would think the next option would be plywood or OSB and the Tyvek house wrap.
