Awning

I am trying to make an awning to cover our bikes. The shown image is screwed into studs. The load is just some corrugated steel roofing sheets. Zone 5, could be a bit of snow.

The issue I'm having is how to attach the awning supports as shown into hollow CMU block?

If someone could recommend a specific product.

Perhaps with some patience and precision I could use some TapCons into the mortar seams of the block?

Can I attach a freestanding deck to concrete block garage wall? is somewhat similar.

TAPCON screws work much better if carefully applied to the block material itself rather than drilling into the mortar joints. However TAPCONs are really rather poor in an application where there is pullout stress load such as your awning brackets. They with much better for shear loads so I would not recommend they for this application.

You could consider either of these ideas:

  1. Use conventional toggle bolts into the hollow spaces of the blocks. The drawback with this approach is that the hole size required to insert the wings of the toggle is quite a bit bigger diameter than the bolt itself.
  2. Drill holes all the way through the block wall and then use long bolts of threaded rods for the mounting. It would also be a good idea to consider a metal plate or wooden plank to span across the blocks and the several bolts for each awing support mounting.
