I have two walls in my living room and dining room that were originally clad in a floor to ceiling wood paneling. There was no drywall behind the panels.

The panels have pet damage on them up to about 12-15" from the floor where urine has wicked up the wood. The panels are otherwise fine.

I've been to three different lumber and housewares suppliers and no one can seem to find anything remotely like them so replacement of the entire panels is a no go.

I want to preserve the look of the panels as there are similar panels in the entryway and other than the pee they had a cool look to them.

The current plan is to cut them off somewhere between 24" and 36" from the floor, leave the undamaged top pieces in place and put in a bead card or geometric MDF wainscoting. I'm still looking around but all the headboard I'm finding is 3/16th" thick and the wood panels are 5/16 thick.

I want to put moulding across the cut in the middle to hide the transition but I'm worried that the difference in height as slight as it is will make it either look off or will result in it being fragile should someone lean against it.

Is there a way to smooth out the difference between the two?

1/8" plywood + 3/16" bead board (or paneling or whatever) ~= 5/16"

1/8" plywood is readily available in 4' x 8' sheets and smaller sizes.

The only way to make 3/16 and 5/16 even is to sand the wood down, but that may not be practical.

A wainscot cap molding installed upside-down may be the answer. Or you may need to cut molding with a 1/8" relief on a table saw.
