Rats have nibbled this out. I cant reach it from inside the attic, but I can get to it with a ladder from outside. So what should I use/do to patch it up?

Some big box stores will have thin metal in rolls about four to six inches wide. Use mainly for flashing.
Easy to cut(box cutters/scissors) and shape and usually comes painted. Can be attached with nails/small screws.
Rats/mice will eat though most materials except concrete or metal. If they want in or out, covering just the hole and they will just move over a bit.
Can place what you want into the hole, before covering.
