There is a coax cable in my livingroom that enters the room from the floor at the baseboard.

It is in an odd location to use for a TV or a cable modem. I would like to hide or otherwise get rid of this connection.

Can I cut the coax so it's flush with the floor and cover it with baseboard? Or does the cable need to be capped or something?

Yes. You can just cut it if you don't need it. It's not really dangerous or anything. This move is pretty much irreversible though. To use the cable again you'd have to install a new connector on the end.

It would be better, especially if you have access to where the cable is coming up through the floor, to pull it back through. You may still have to cut the connector off the end to get it through the hole. Then disconnect the cable from the source.

A more elegant solution (if you plan to sell, since a future owner might be able to use the cable) would be to put it into the wall and terminate with a wall plate.

Coax cable carries very low DC voltage if it is connected to something like an amplifier. Normal usage has it carrying RF signals.

It is not a threat to cause a fire, unless it is connected to a power source that it was not designed for. (Like if someone did something very stupid and connected it to house voltage. Not likely. )

If it is just an unused and abandoned cable you can cut the end off and push it under the baseboard without worry.
