In April 2014, my wife and I purchased a house with a detached garage from a national builder "built to code". I am working on finishing out the detached garage. The detached garage is 20'x24' and is 2-stories. There are steps that lead up to the second story (20'x20'). The second story is currently unfinished and I plan to finish it as private - get away space.

When a builder says, "built to code", the builder is telling me that they have adopted the minimal safety and quality standard. I have found that the professionals and inspectors do miss stuff, some not so serious and others very serious. I jokingly say that I bought a brand new fixer-upper.

My goal is to finish the detached garage, first and second floor. . .
