I have an English walnut that is approx. 5-6 years old. There is a White fungus growing in the collar from a branch I removed. Is it harmful or caused by moisture? The tree is 20 feet tall and is bearing nuts. In the state of Wisconsin.

The decay has already started, and youre likely to end up with at least some level of heart rot. It’s not effective to use any type of sealant on the wound to prevent rot, those products are snake oil and can sometimes actually cause more harm than no treatment. If you wish, you could try to apply fungicide such as boric acid to the open wound regularly until the new bark fully heals it over, but some level of decay is already present at this point, and likely to continue.

I would put bleach on it to kill the fungus. A few applications would be good . If fungus gets into the trunk the tree will slowly die.
