I've noticed two large holes under our three giant redwoods. We have many squirrels and I'm thinking they did that, but those holes look really large so I'm wondering whether squirrels do indeed dig such large holes. I've not seen droppings or caught anyone around the holes (so far). They are hidden from my view point from within the house and they can hear if I walk toward the location.

I've taken a few pictures to show how large these are. Where I grew up, Eastern France, these would be rabbit holes. I don't think we have rabbits, however, we do have skunks and raccoons (although I don't think raccoons would venture this far, over 1 mile, from the river side or parks) and large black rats in the area. But I've see rat holes that look much more like mole holes and these are not the same at all.

Update — Apr 14, 2014

As mentioned in a comment below, I got various wild life animals (birds, squirrels) with my trail cam. I have a slideshow on Youtube with those.

Now, I finally got some night time pictures which show an animal. The previous ones were completely white, here I can see a rodent... (click on the picture to zoom in)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I'm pretty convinced that those rats do not dig holes like those. They do holes more like moles and you see mounts of mud over those. But clearly we now have rodents we need to eradicate. I still think that's interesting to see night time pictures showing results.

Rat in the hole & comparable size to squirrel

  1. Here we see a rat like shape and a tail
  2. This picture, that happened a little later, shows the rat in the hole
  3. Look at the ears, you can see the head with a darker shade in the center
  4. Another picture, a little more on the side, we see the tail in front of the tree trunk
  5. Same as previous picture to show that the size compared to an adult squirrel who came by during the day
  6. Another shot with the rat in the hole
  7. The squirrel... pretty standard, here to show the size difference between the squirrel and the rat

Could possibly be an opossum? You can attach some wire fencing at base, like chicken wire to prevent further digging.
