I would like to grow,
- Golden Hills Pistachio (Female)
- Randy Pistachio (Male)
in central Oklahoma (Zone 7b). Most websites (including the above links) point out that they grow in zones 7-10. I am trying to do some research about possible pitfalls since they are a bit of an investment. I tried calling the local agriculture office and they seem to not know as much but pointed out that people do quite often grow the Chinese Pistache (not a nut bearing tree) around here. He also pointed out that I wanna make sure that the trees I grow are resistant to Verticillium Wilt which it looks like Golden Hills are.
Does anyone know more about growing these trees in 7b? It seems people have had success growing them to the west of Oklahoma in New Mexico. The only thing that I am a bit vary of is the soil type here. It seems that Pistachios like sandy soil vs. clay-like and the soil here is pretty much red-clay/dirt. But, the customer-service at FastGrowingTrees said that one can mix in some sand while planting, i. e., some soil conditioning to avoid any big problems at first since the trees can still grow in any type of soil.
Any cautionary tales or advice is welcome.
