I recently bought two bromeliads, both with red centers and green outermost leaves. I watered the first one sparingly (only a few milliliters a day), as instructed by several websites, but after a while the center lost its red color, eventually all leaves withered away and the plant died; this one received a lot of light in the morning, and none after noon, as I also read they like light but not too much.

The second I bought a little later and tried to water even less, once or twice a week; it receives a lot of sun in the evening, and none before noon. But it started to look just like the old none, see picture below. What am I doing wrong? Am I watering too little, too much, are they receiving too much light, too little, are they sick...? I live in a quite warm climate, the last few weeks consistently hit over 25°C, and the last one over 30°C.
