So someone (not me!) has committed the classic gardening sin of not labelling cuttings, under the slightly pessimistic assumption that they would be lucky if any of them were to take roots. Now I am facing a whole planter with nearly two dozen cuttings eagerly leafing out.

We would like to give them to friends and family, but it would be a good idea to label them correctly. And here is the problem:

They are red currant (Ribes rubrum) and jostaberry (Ribes x nidigrolaria). As they are both Ribes, they are remarkably similar at this stage.

Some of them show flower buds, so identifying them is easy:

But what about the others? Is there a way to tell them apart without waiting for them to flower?
