Here are seeds of Coffea arabica that have a brittle papery outer layer:

Should I remove the brittle outer layer before sowing the coffee seeds? The instructions on the seed packet do not mention the removal of the outer layer. However, an acquaintance from a coffee-producing area has mentioned that they have witnessed the removal of the outer layer before sowing. Is there an increased risk of mold if the outer layer is not removed?

As that outer layer doesn't seem to be physically connected to the inner seed, it shouldn't have much difference toward the outcome anyway.
