I purchased a bag of Avocados at a farmer's market in Brisbane last week. Almost all of them have these stone like things in them.

  • There can range from 2 to 10
  • Most are close to the skin
  • Some are attached to the skin
  • Size is from 2mm diameter to 10mm

I did some searching.

Apparently

They are Stone cells (or sclereids) are "sclerenchyma cells characterized by thickening and lignified cell walls" and are "formed by the secondary deposition of lignin on the primary cell wall of parenchyma cells

From Sclerocarpelosis in Avocado Fruit

and

Sclereids are defined as "a reduced form of sclerenchyma cells with highly thickened, lignified cellular walls that form small bundles of durable layers of tissue in most plants" and "produce the gritty texture of guavas."

From Wikipedia - Sclereid

Its probably correct as I did eat some of them and they were gritty like guava. Then I decided to cut them off, in case they were insect based.
