Below are the Engine parameters at idle:

  • Engine load-calculated value: 70.2%
  • Mass air flow: 6.95g/s
  • Intake manifold absolute pressure: 62kPa
  • Intake air temperature: 36°C
  • Engine coolant temperature: 90 °C
  • Engine speed: 1337.5rpm
  • Vehicle speed: 0 km/h
  • Throttle – position: 5.1%
  • Throttle position sensor value: 21.18%
  • Throttle position sensor value_2: 54.12%
  • Throttle actuator motor – duty ratio: 21.18%

At idling and at low speeds, the engine feels heavy and revs at above 1000rpms, the fuel consumption drops to 2km/l. At higher speeds eg on the highway the car consumes reasonably well (16-22km/l), the issue is with engine running at low speeds. I have had the throttle cleaned, put new recommended spark plugs and replaced the air filters.

What could be the issue? How do i fix it?

The car is a 2016 toyota corolla hybrid with 110,000km.

Note; the battery and hybrid part run ok.

The issue your describing could be related to a throttle position sensor (TPS) calibration issue, as the TPS values seem off. This can cause incorrect throttle input which then leads to rough idling, high revs, and poor fuel economy. Even though you cleaned the throttle, it may need to be recalibrated and or even replaced, could be faulty. Also check the idle air control valve and the fuel injectors. I usually run Jectron fuel injector cleaners every 6 months. it helps.
