I took up a job constructing a ditch for a lady as a Summer project, and I'm not exactly an expert, so I wanted to confirm my information with experts here.

Below, I have a diagram that I drew detailing the materials I plan to use in order to construct a dry creek bed. Did I get everything right, or do I need to switch some things around, perhaps swap materials, have a different ditch shape?

I appreciate all the help I can get! Thank you very much!

You have only shown us a diagram so I can't comment on the site without context. These items came to mind:

  • if you are using crushed limestone for the smaller stone make sure you do not get it delivered with "fines". This is the dust that comes from crushing and will react to create a sort of adhesive over time.
  • consider putting geotextile between the layers if cost allows
  • how much water is this intended to handle? Once in a hundred year flood? As davidgo hints at using one or two runs of 4" PVC drain pipe with sleeve that has holes in at at the bottom of the trench would go a long ways towards adding drainage capacity
  • What is the slope for the trench? If it is visually noticeable you may wish to use a technique I have seen used in ditches where there are a series of V shapes at the top of the ditch to slow the progress of the water
  • what about weeds? They will grow anywhere, even in stone. Consider an area about a foot wide on either side using stone slabs or ???. This will prevent some of the weed and grass seeds from being blown in by the wind or the mower
